Soumis

London (CNN)A Japanese pilot found to be more than nine times over the legal alcohol limit before a scheduled flight from London Heathrow in October has been sentenced to 10 months in prison, police said Thursday. Katsutoshi Jitsukawa, 42, an employee of flag carrier Japan Airlines, was scheduled to fly from Heathrow to Tokyo on October 28 at 6:50 p.m. local time, but failed a breath test shortly before takeoff. The test showed Jitsukawa had 189 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in his body.… (www.cnn.com) Plus d'info...

To be able to even walk that intoxicated is the hallmark of a serial 'closet' drinker and can somehow seem to function almost normally. Until they don't.

The incident that resulted in the criminal charges was in October. The sentencing was last week.

Oh ok. I missed that.

Thanks

He had probably taken many flights ONLY 4 or 5 times over if he was still functioning at 9. 10 months will probably not unpickle this guy.

Nine times over and able to function?

I will add to Matt's point. He is lucky he can breath let alone move. He is fortunate that he didn't aspirate.

So just what is the legal blood alcohol limit for a commercial pilot?

I mean, on duty, to be clear.

That is the on-duty limit.

"The test showed Jitsukawa had 189 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in his body. The legal limit for pilots is 20 mg, while drivers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are allowed as much as 80 mg."

Japanese culture is for "the boys" to toss a few back after a hectic day. It's not a good habit. Have to wonder what detox was like in a London jail. With that level of alcohol and still able to function, suddenly stopping drinking would cause a severe reaction.

I'm curious if there have been disciplinary actions that were taken against any other members of the flight crew -- they had to have been aware of Jitsukawa's condition and likely covered up for him. It would have been their responsibility to report him, it shouldn't have taken a conscientious bus driver to prevent Jitsukawa from getting into the cockpit.
