102 Air India pilots found flying with lapsed licences

Soumis

NEW DELHI: The next time you take a flight in India, keep your fingers crossed and hope that your pilot is flying on a valid licence, not a lapsed one. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com) Plus d'info...

Did I hear somebody ask awhile back about the difference between 121 and 129 pilots. Here is one.

And they are having trouble with there 787s? Hmm wonder about the mechanics and supervisors who maintain the AC they have. One person comments on the ability of the pilots, my thought is how about there medicals? Is that one reason they are out of license?

I think I read in some local Indian newspaper that the number is much larger. What ever be the nature of the defect, it is invalid , illegal. Period. No justification can be accepted. For other reasons a year ago FAA down graded Indian Aviation after plenty of grace period . And now this . Where are we Indians going ? When shall we learn ? What kind of reprimand will put us on the right path ? With tall claims to rub shoulders in/with G-8 ? And even to be a permanent member in the UNSC ! :-( :-(

You are correct on the grace period my friend and I think you are correct on a larger problem. Some say you don't become unsafe just because of a license lapse. That is correct for awhile, but especially with an ATP and continually evolving aircraft, even of the same type, there are stringent, periodic medical requirements and recurrency training to keep you safe. You are in the best position to try and effect the change for the rest of it. Coming onto the world stage is not without cost.

Just to play devils advocate here... But just because your license lapses, does that mean you immediately forget how to fly a plane, or drive a car for that matter? Yes, you are not legally supposed to fly/drive, but that does not mean you all of a sudden become a safety risk.

If I read the story correctly, the licenses lapsed due to a failure to do a proficiency check to verify that they could indeed fly the plane. I understand that failure to prove you are not a safety risk, does not mean you are one. Nor does it mean you are not.
