FAA to study use of electronics on planes
It's going to be a while before airline passengers can use iPads and other electronic devices during the whole flight. The Federal Aviation Administration says it's forming a committee to study the issue. But its plan suggests the committee's work won't be done until March at the earliest. FAA to reevaluate inflight portable electronic device use – no cell phones though
If you have been on a commercial airline, the phrase "The use of any portable electronic equipment while the aircraft is taxiing, during takeoff and climb, or during approach and landing," is as ubiquitous but not quite as tedious as "make sure your tray tables are in the secure locked upright position."

What the MythBusters did find is that trying to use a cell phone while flying 600 miles per hour at 30,000 feet wreaks havoc on the cell tower system on the ground. At that speed and altitude the call attempts to bounce off of many cell towers simultaneously, which is why the FCC banned cellular connections in flight—not the FAA—and why actually using the cell phone to make voice calls is still not open for debate.
