Certainly they would've diverted back to JFK had they taken off prior to getting the message, but it's rare that the real world unfolds with movie-like drama and timing.

My understanding is they got him before the pushed off the gate and wanted to speak with two others on the plane. But, you are right, he got through security. A one way ticket, paid for in cash. Makes you wonder why we stand in long lines when something so obvious is overlooked.

Shawn is correct: the suspect was taken off the plane before it ever left the gate. The plane was called back so they could take off two other people they were worried about. The other two were cleared and released.
