An A-4D is a single engine jet. This is an A-1D.

"AD-4" is the original Navy designation for this aircraft. In 1963 both the Navy and the Air Force adopted a common designation for aircraft. Subsequent to the change the "AD Skyraider" was redesignated "A-1 SKyraider". The "dash" following the basic designation under either nomenclature represents the "modification/model" of the aircraft.

I wonder if there is ballast up front, that engine doesn't look it's enough to get a flyable cg.
Lucius Gravely
If I'm not mistaken, it has a 4360 up front.

A massive heavily armored aircraft. I walked out the wing once and there is no give. Heavy armor around the cockpit. Just can't say enough about how impressive this aircraft is. You knew when you looked up and saw this coming at ya the battle was about to change. Kicked some Charlie butt and soften up the field for rescue.

When I was on my tour in Vietnam attached to the 1st squadron 9th cav of First Cav Div in the 61st LRRP Unit out of Camp Evans 1968, we called in group support missions from DaNang. They then sent us A1H skyraiders that was either Vietnamese pilots or US Air-force pilots. Because the American pilots spoke better english we could control the mission better than using flights with Vietnamese pilots.
