From my being a veteran and taking much interest in Military History, especially WWII history, I'm quite familiar with the use of the P-51 Mustang and also the P-38 Lockheed Lightning. There were a number of excellent aircraft in use at that time but these two were probably the best of their kind to compete with the enemy aircraft of that era.
