What is this beautiful plane?
Mark Lansdell
A good friend and USMC srgt, assigned to a carrier in Korea, told me he had charge of, I think he said 3 of these beauties. This is the first picture I've seen after hearing about them 40 years ago. My friend is gone but not his stories and some great memories. He was a great man and a great manager. He taught me much.

I think this is a "Black Widow" late WWII night fighter. Looks like it's going 500 MPH just sitting
on the tarmac.

Thomas, this is one of Grumman's famous "cats"... a F7F Tigercat!

A breath-taking bird...

So sweet but it was reported not to be as fast as the P-38. Only a pilot of both would know for sure.

Beautiful old warbird. I always thought the F7F was one of the most beautiful fighters of the era
There is one in the air museum at Scholes Field (KGLS) in Galveston Texas

You can catch one of these up at the Reno Air Races every year.
The Best Sounding plane coming down The Valley of Speed.
You can't beat those two big round motors at full tilt.

A beautiful airplane. Someone thought this F7F was a Northrop P-61 Black Widow. Sorry not so.

A couple of you guys are easily confused.
This is the Grumman F7F Tigercat and NOT a Northrop P-61 Black Widow!
The extremely narrow fuselage is very distinctive to this plane, the Black Widow has a much more full size fuselage, almost like a B-25 look to it.
This is NOT an old black and white photo, all you have to do is LOOK at the photo to tell the difference. Look at the AvFuel sign at the modern FBO and the newer vehicles.

Great image of F7F - tho a modern photo from the setting, the grainy texture and slightly offset/uncorrected pic gives the image great atmosphere - 5 Stars! Happy New Year to All

Nice photo of a great looking aircraft, the Tigercat is always a magnificent photo opp. Nice touch creating a black and white high contrast photo - great composition. The only improvement would be to straighten the photo in software - it looks like the aircraft is parked on a hill, easy fix that is often overlooked.

I found out that the Cyberlink Photo Director app in windows 8 will let you adjust tilt in a pic.

Nice classic shot!
