Wow! Nice. Plus a Pan Am 727 100 series on the left side, plus an even rarer bird being the PA DC8 Classic way over to the right.Impressive!
Great stuff, I agree with Chris, also worth mention are the VW ground support vehicles. Very nice addition to the gallery Peter!
Great comments, guys. I do so enjoy photographs of airliners from a time when airline travel was elegant and flight crews were meticulously groomed. I guess I am a bit nostalgic.
Pan Am, in the day, held rights to service West Berlin from multiple West German airports. Remember that West Berlin was "occupied" at the time, and was not a part of West Germany. The 727 would have provided service between Dusseldorf and Templehof.
Wonderful scene. I was working for Pan-am at that time at EGLL. The 111 was one of three G-TPJ/K/L and the DC8 one of 20 N800PA - 819. They were used on flights from KJFK to European gateways where the extra capability of the B707-321 wasn't an absolute necessity so that one would have come from New York via Shannon on PA76. We never saw the 727s in London, all their servicing etc was done at Frankfurt with a dispatch centre at Berlin actually controlling the 'IGS' (Internal German Service) operation.
As a kid in the 60's I flew often on Braniff's BAC-111's on the short haul flights from Brownsville to Corpus Christi, Houston, and Dallas, and back again. Brings back lots of memories.
Awesome shot of a Lufthansa VW!
