Airbus A300F4-600 (N733FD)
There are no skiers on the ski runs yet as FDX's "Lily" (N733FD), an A306, climbs away from RNO's Runway 16R and begins a cross country flight to Memphis (KMEM).
Comments
The ski runs were not open yet. If "Lily" had departed about 20 minutes later, the runs would have been full of skiers.
Hi Gary. What would be the elevation of that peak beyond November 733 Foxtrot Delta?
Howdy, Chris. There are two high peaks in that immediate vicinity; the one seen here is Slide Mountain which is 9,702 feet (2,957 m) high. (* The other one, which is just out of the right side of this shot, is Mt. Rose, which is 10,785 feet [3,287 m] *). The Mt. Rose ski resort is named after Mt. Rose but is actually located on Slide Mountain and the runs visible here are part of the resort's operation. Reno Tahoe International, where I am standing for this shot, is 25 driving miles [40 km] away from Slide Mtn, but the road is NOT a straight line so that distance is misleading ... the straight line distance is much less than 25 miles. The airport's elevation is 4,415 feet (1,346 m). And also, as a bit of trivia, if you have ever seen pics of the Reno Air heritage livery being flown by American Airlines, there are three snow-capped mountains on the tail. Slide Mountain is one of the "peaks" being depicted. Another one is Mt. Rose. The third one is somewhat debatable, but every single lifelong resident I have ever talked to insists that the third peak depicted on the tail is Peavine. Peavine is located northwest of downtown and stands nowhere near as high as Slide or Mt. Rose; in fact, it truly is merely a foothill of the Sierra Nevada; however, it does become snow covered during the winter and (I can't prove this but) I think that is why the lifelong locals insist it is the third mountain on the tail of the Reno Air heritage. What I definitely can attest to is that Slide Mountain and Mt. Rose are two of the peaks on the tail.
Great shot, Gary!
Howdy Gary! Okay, thanks for that because I was looking at the photo and I was wondering if I was looking at Mt. Rose at the top of those ski runs. I hadn't even heard of Slide Mountain until you mentioned it. Also, I do recall that Reno Air heritage livery. Nice explanation! Keep safe up there. Wave from down here in SYD!
5* Gary! Great shot.
Great shot as always Gary. I have hiked to tops of Rose and Slide. Great views.
