Boeing 737-800 (N916NN)
Not long ago, I received an email asking if I knew what the design on the tail of American's "Reno Air" heritage livery scheme was representing. The writer knew that the city of Reno is located "near Lake Tahoe," but wanted to know if the mountains on the tail of N916NN actually depict any real scene. As shown in this photo, the answer is "yes."
AAL's "Reno Air" heritage livery B738 is captured here at 6:30 AM on its takeoff roll along Reno Tahoe International's 16L. From this spotting location, as N916NN races down 16L, two of the mountains depicted on the tail are visible in the background: Slide Mountain on the left and Mt. Rose on the right.
Comments
The view of the Sierra Nevada west of the city is the "scene" being "represented" by the three snow capped mountains in the Reno Air livery. Two of those mountains, the two that are visible in the background of this photo, are always the most prominent. Although the snow on Slide Mountain has usually melted by midsummer, there is often a small area near the very top of Mt. Rose that has snow even into August. The actual "identity" of the "third" mountain on the tail is a matter of individual opinion. A few lifelong Renoites I've met say it represents Peavine Mountain which is not in the immediate vicinity of these two (it is more to the northwest of the city), but I tend to think the tail logo is a depiction of the portion of the Sierra Nevada range that extends southwest of the airport and city.
