How does FlightAware handle flights around the world? What is FlightAware's service area? | BACK TO TOP
FlightAware's primary service area includes airspace operated by the United States (including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto RIco, and Guam), Canada, the Caribbean, Australia, the United Kingdom, and France. Flights in the primary service area support real time maps, departure and arrival information, delays, and more.

FlightAware's secondary service covers scheduled major airline operations at any airport in the world. Flights in the secondary service area support departure and arrival information. Secondary coverage areas may have real-time positions for ADS-B equipped aircraft operating in FlightAware's ADS-B coverage area. Additionally, some airlines send FlightAware satellite position reports from aircraft worldwide that augments other position data and provides transoceanic coverage as well.

For flights arriving in a service area from outside of a service area, FlightAware will be able to track the flight when it nears a service area. For flights departing a service area, FlightAware will be able to track the flight until it leaves the coverage area. Flights may not be tracked beyond that point unless they enter another service area.

Not all worldwide data sources (e.g., European data, datalink ARINC/SITA ACARS, etc) are freely available on FlightAware.com due to government regulations or commercial arrangements. You can contact us if you have a commercial need for worldwide data.
How live is FlightAware's tracking and status data? | BACK TO TOP
The data displayed on FlightAware.com is typically 30 seconds delayed from real time.

Navigation

How do I view the "inbound flight"? | BACK TO TOP
When you are waiting at an commercial airport gate to board a flight and your aircraft has not yet arrived, it may be useful to track the inbound flight to see how late it is. After all, your flight will not be able to depart until that aircraft for the previous flight has arrived and those passengers have exited.

Once you are viewing the details page of a commercial flight, tap the "..." button in the lower-right toolbar to reveal additional actions on the flight. If an "Inbound Flight" option is present, then you can tap that action to track the status of the incoming flight that will be later be serving the flight you were viewing.

FlightAware is only able to track the inbound flight for airlines that provide tail number and gate information to us.

Permissions

Why does the app need to access my contacts? Do you send all of my contact information or spam them? | BACK TO TOP
The FlightAware Android app allows you to share Flight Alerts with a friend by email so that they will know when to pick you up at the airport.

The app needs access to read your contacts to allow you to pick recipients from your email address book if you choose to create a shared flight alert. If you never create a shared Flight Alert, then the app will never actually read your contacts. Your contacts are not used for any other purpose and only the email address of the contact that you select is transmitted to FlightAware for the purpose of sending flight alerts.
Why does the app need to access my photos? | BACK TO TOP
The FlightAware Android app actually just requests access to read and write the storage on your phone, but the permissions dialog lists that as "Photos/Media/Files". The app needs to read and write map files that it downloads from the Internet, and those map files are cached into a folder that the app creates. No other files outside of the FlightAware folder, /sdcard/Android/data/com.flightaware.android.liveflighttracker and /sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.maps/cache, are accessed.
