SIA479 Tracked Live Over the Indian Ocean with Aireon Space-Based ADS-B

Soumis

Watch Singapore 479, an Airbus A350 travel from Johannesburg (JNB) to Singapore (SIN). This was one of the first flights to be tracked live over the Indian Ocean thanks to positions from Aireon’s satellite hosted space-based ADS-B network. Aireon's network is 50% complete and we're already able to track more flights than ever before possible. (twitter.com) Plus d'info...

Watching the Iridium launches have been fun, so it's nice to see this real-world application of those launches to go with it!

Tracking data does not seem to have reached FA's data stream as yet. Part was tracked over the IO but that may have been from Reunion Island. Am confident the sat data will go into production as some point.

The Aireon space-based ADS-B data is not publicly available -- the animation on Twitter is demonstrating the capability that we're beta testing.

Do you think at some point it will be?

I checked earlier and did not see it.

I sincerely hope this is a hedge against another MH370 from happening.

Wonderful to see the fruits of the partnership between FlightAware and Iridium. Full implementation will be so important for airlines, travelers, and more. Innovation at its best!

I am pleased to read that . I am a retired Air Canada pilot and I wrote to IATA and ICAO many years ago that with today’s technology , tracking of airliners , with transponders , could be done all over the world , eliminating the need to carry voice and data recorders , info could be sent live to a satellite . After searching for 2 years for the Air France recorders , en route from Rio to Paris and costing hundreds of millions of dollars . More importantly , tracks over the oceans are 2 degrees of latitude , 2 times 60 nm versus 10nm for a domestic route . The savings would be in the billions with better safety ! Hallelujah, at last .

Do SAT phones work over or on the Indian Ocean? Or, How do ships communicate crossing the Indian Ocean?

Long before SATCOM was HF radio. Doesn't require satalites.

This is a great news and advancement for Aviation Safety. But it wont replace the Flight data recorder and Cockpit voice recorder essential part to aircraft accident investigation.

About time

This only works if the avionics can't be accessed or turned off in flight.

If the aircraft stops broadcasting the position, we can alert on it immediately with this new technology.

You're addressing reasonable equipment malfunctions. I'm talking about human operator malfunctions. The system should be unreachable in flight and powered by a minimum essential bus so it can't be intentionally disabled. That would make be feel safer. If you can't discuss this that in this forum, I understand.

In that the absence of the signal for a period of time would trigger the alert, it doesn't matter if it was malfunction or malevolence. The last known good position would be a starting point. I don't think he is constrained from discussion by fear of retaliation from his higher-ups.
