To Reach Simple Life of Summer Camp, Lining Up for Private Jets

Soumis

Gov. Paul LePage of Maine happened to be waiting for his flight at Augusta State Airport on a recent Saturday when the weekend crush began. A turboprop Pilatus PC-12 carrying Melissa Thomas, her daughter, her daughter’s friend and a pile of lacrosse equipment took off for their home in Connecticut, following the girls’ three-week stay at Camp All-Star in nearby Kents Hill, Me. Shortly after, a Cessna Citation Excel arrived, and a mother, a father and their 13-year-old daughter emerged carrying a… (www.nytimes.com) Plus d'info...

i thought the government destroyed general aviation?!? what's obama waiting for? ;) interesting read, although i doubt myself nor most readers of this article could afford to send their children to camp via a citation or gulfstream.

So three couples whose kids are at the same camp charter a B200 for about the same as they can all fly commercial (in a third of the time), what's the big deal? If you can send your kid to a $10G summer camp, it's not a stretch. I can't afford it either, but I wish I could, and don't resent the people who can.

Wow, these poor kids..Gotta ride on a private jet..Whatever happened to taking a bus to camp??

When I was a kid, it was a fantastic experience to get on a BUS to go to camp and escape the city life! These kids are destined for disappointment, since there is nowhere to go but down for them and their expectations.

I took 2 buses to Camp. that is not the point!

Why are we hating on people that are using their money to employ pilots, ramp personnel, maintenance & paying FAA Fuel Taxes while congress gave the Airlines a Tax Holiday on ticket Taxes!

Aviation creates jobs, Summer camps creates jobs!

Should I take the greyhound to OshKosh later this week?

Indy, everyone in life experiences disapointment. A kid doesn't have to rich, or poor, to take a few lumps. One thing I noticed when working such charters, the kids of the rich tend to be more polite and respectful than the average. I would say that most are destined for success in life, because their parents are preparing them for the responsiblity of wealth. Your statements ring of class envy.

Or, Bena, it's amazing far some people will go to display their distain for anyone with more than they personally have. How about the fact that is no one's business how these people spend their money. How ironic that liberals complain when the rich don't spend, then complain when they do spend. Which way do you want the world to work, Bena?

Hey, more power to these people. My son is a 1k hour CFII trying to make it into the big league. He would give is right arm to fly as F/O getting these kids to camp. He is making it on his own, but instructing allows for a very strict budget. He looks forward to the future and lots of people with their own planes!!!!!

Yes, a couple families can get together and charter a King Air or Citation for roughly what it would cost per person to fly commercial. The airlines are cutting out service to alot of smaller towns, so this makes more sense than ever.

Riddle me this Batman. During the great recession, sales of the big iron, Gulfstreams etc. remained steady if not increased. Do you people think the super rich could pay more taxes to help with our debt problems? I know I'm willing to take a 20 or 30 dollar a month hit to do my share.
philliploposser
I love me some good ole fashioned class warfare. God bless this country and the wealth we have. Wealthy people employ people. Regardless of your political views or economic status, thats just the way it is. No bones about it.
rick737
richard weiss 0
Kadaver, do you realize we could confiscate all the wealth of all the billionaires and still not collect enough to pay off our national debt. For guys like you it's not about the debt, it's about feeling like you shafted the rich guy. If you want more in life, work for it. Taking it from someone else will only take away their money and the country's dignity.
MANBOI
MANBOI 0
Do you think the government will pay down the debt with your extra $20-30 per month? Or that taxing 'the rich' will have a positive affect on anything? (debt, economy, jobless numbers, mood). When tax rates when as high as 90% 'rich people' never paid 90%. Now at lower rates 'rich' Americans pay more than any citizens of any country. Oh but just a little bit more.

Anyway, I sent my oldest boys and their bff to camp on our plane this year. Unfortunately I had to send the plane to pick them up. When I was a kid I had to take a 9 hour bus ride and then a 12 hour boat trip to get to camp.
kadriver
kadriver 0
Guys like me, you dont know me. When Warren Buffet says his secretary pays more actual tax than he does that says something is wrong with the current system. I don't want to shaft the rich guy. A flat 10% income tax for everyone and spending cuts could work.
By the way, you kinda sound like a neocon.

joeserdynski
Joe Serdynski 0
General Aviation is extremely US Government subsidized. The only reason there is an airport ANYWHERE is that the 'Socialist' people (us po' folk) paid to put them there. Private airports you say, give me break, like to see a BOD approve that for Daddy's G-V . . .
rick737
richard weiss 0
Hey Joe, The government didn't pay for those airports, the taxes collected from the users of the airport pay for it. The bigger the plane, the bigger the tax bite. So when you say "govt subsidized" what you are saying "user fee subsidized." The Feds just distribute the funds in the most advantageous way for the political party in power. Wake up, Joe.

Makes me puke, not only the article itself but what moved the so-called "reporter" to come up with such piece of baloney, in the NY TImes nothing less.
rick737
richard weiss 0
If the label neocon, denotes my lack of trust of our government, indicates I beleive we are all taxed to much, the government spends too much, we have become a society of victims, we live in fear of the ACLU showing up to sue us for doing what our founding fathers intended to be normal behavior, on and on and on, then I will take what ever label you choose to assign. One thing I will never do is envy someone for having more than I. That is part of liberal America and I will have no part of it.
By the way Kadaver, if Warren Buffet is so worried about not paying his fair share, he can write a check to the department of treasury for any amount he likes. I just watched Buffet tell a CNBC news anchor he pays $240,000.00 per year in tax on the jet his supplies his kids from NetJets. That alone would surely be more in tax than his secretary pays. Get off the class warfare. It makes you sound childish

Speaking of, GE realized a $ 12 BILLION profit last year and paud ABSOLUTELY ZERO INCOME TAX. Go President Obama, eliminate all these free riders, loopholers, beneficiaries of subsidies and grants, etc. and make tme paiy their fair share.

Hey chalet, did you get the news, The CEO of GE is Jeffery Immelt. He is on the President's committee of business leaders advising him on how to get the economy moving. Well, Jeffery is moving alright. He's moving his company's medical imaging division to CHINA. Why, to avoid the high taxes. That is how The President's friend keeps his tax bill low. Is there anything telling you how screwed this country is yet, under the leadership of that baffoon we have for a president.

Other than the Governor waiting for his ride there was little to do with politics but like so many threads inevitably politics becomes the topic of conversation, it's sad how so many postings degenerate to political bashing. Just sayin'

rick737

Jetchaser is correct. We are seeing a deepening divide in our country that is fueled by absurd news reports. An article such as this was written by a biased journalist, in a meager and naked attempt to re-enforce b.o.'s statements on fat cat corporate jet owners. If the news media would actually stick to important issues, report them fairly and quit choosing sides, much of this would stop. Those jet arriving in the Maine airport provide a much needed boost to the local economy. The wealth gets spread by the old fashion capitalist method. If the locals want to hang on the fence and watch with disgust and and envy, they have choosen to live in a way that is very unhealthy for themselves and our nation. If you want to fly around on your own jet, work hard, work smart and never accept second best. But don't blame the people who have done so for your not doing so.

These mothers are doing boys a favor by pointing out how "high maintenance" their daughters are. Imagine how these kids will react if a date taking them to dinner expects them to walk from a parking lot: "What you are taking me to a restaurant without valet parking? No way, after all my parents chartered a jet to take me to summer camp when I was 13. I expect the same kind of treatment from anyone I date. I'm rich and I deserve special treatment."

I think you can spend your own money the way you like and in the process others prosper. The more successful people are they make maps for others. There is plenty of money to go around if you are interested and willing.

I thought there was some value in the shared journey there and back. You know, time to talk, to get to know each other a little better without interruption. Now it's just a matter of dumping them off and getting back to their life. Why do they have kids in the first place? I don't get it.
rick737

Ann, I know, let's make the trip by horse and wagon. Or better yet, let each parent choose the method to raise their children without interference. It's none of my, or your, business.

Summer Camp? My summers were spent helping out my father and grandfather in their dry cleaning business. I never knew summer camps existed.
Those who say that the "wealth trickles down" are dreaming. There aren't enough millionaires to maintain the economy. It is the middle class than run the economy. We are the job creators not the rich. Say NO to the GOP and these TeaBaggers that are trying to destroy the middle class.
scrippsgirl
Tracy Sear 0
God forbid they mingle with the plain folk. It's not a matter of convenience, it's a matter of isolation. The wealthy mingle with the wealthy. Not unusual.

However in this economic climate, their conspicuous consumption is all the more apparent. This is the latest iteration of arriving at their private schools in limousines.

In addition to flying, I have a business with clients in that income category, and believe me, to them, we're just oxygen bandits. I'm getting really tired of having them play "let's make a deal" with my fees.

So, is it any surprise that these republicans in the top 2% are clinging so fiercely to their tax breaks and calling any removal of them "tax hikes"? They flat out don't care about those not in their inner circle.

In fact, the faster they get rid of the middle class, the faster our wages go down.

We all know why the tax codes contain so many thousands of pages. It's to give special treatment to somebody. It could be condensed to a short story if everyone was treated equally.
kadriver
kadriver 0
James, that was the point I was trying to make way above. A flat 10% on income for everyone. And If you can afford a G or Global you can afford to pay the sales tax on it instead of trying to deduct it somewhere. And no Rick737 I'm not trying to shaft the rich guy, I just want him to pay what he's supposed to without using a covey of lawyers and accountants to find some way of not paying the sales tax.
WALLACE24
WALLACE24 0
yes kadriver, we all know many ways to make it simpler and fairer and our leaders do too. only difference is we don't need votes and they do.
rick737
richard weiss 0
The only fair tax is one of two choices. 1. A flat tax...take 10 cents of every dollar earned by EVERYONE. That way Warren Buffet and his secretary pay the portions of their wages. OR... a national sales tax. The more one spends the more they pay. Spend nothing, pay nothing...spend a lot, pay a lot. Would that help the people who currently pay no income tax stop whining about the rich folks that pay most of it? I find it interesting that many think because someone has money they should give an enormous portion of it to the government. The goverment didn't earn it. What has lead anyone to believe the federal government has a track record of spending tax dollars wisely? This country doesn't have a shortfall of revenue, we have shortfall of sanity in the way we spend. I find it ironic that many are lamenting the furlough of 4000 FAA employees. Federal employees have been immune to unemployment for decades, while the rest of have worried from week to week about our jobs. FINALLY, a few government functionaries hit the street and tears are shed on the senate floor.

Yet, so many think the best way to fix everything is to TAKE from someone and GIVE to another. Never has worked , never will work.

So sit on the fence and complain about the "fat cat" with the means to seend his kids to camp on a chartered plane. That envy trait will take you far in life.
rick737
richard weiss 0
Oh yeah, now Tracy Sear says if they have money they are republicans. That is just plain dumb. How about all those friends of b.o. on Wall street that pump huge sums into his campaign? Buffet, Soros, Immelt? Turn on MSNBC and watch the constant parade of limo liberals, talking down middle Americans. Get your facts together before making an idiot of yourself, Sear.

I don't get this jealousness, envy and rage at success be it one political party or another or another human.

BTW I am ready for a 10% flat or national sales tax.....oh, and that little thing the politicians don't seem to understand: living within the "allowance" we send them.
