Aviation Safety Expert Archie Trammell Flies West
Archie Trammell, Jr., a renowned aviation journalist, safety advocate, and weather radar expert, died on February 5. He was 89. Born on October 23, 1928, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Trammell long had a passion for aviation, receiving Army Air Corps training during World War II. He subsequently became a mechanic and joined the U.S. Coast Guard, where he went to Loran school and first learned about radar on the job. I was fortunate enough to attend one of his radar seminars in the mid 80s. The information that he passed on was enlightening and amazing and has kept me out of trouble and the wings and paint on the airplanes that I've flown ever since. Knowing what you can fly thru and what you can't has made my airborne decisions much easier and quicker. It's sad to see pilots today still misusing their radar and getting into trouble. I still have my handouts from the class and refer to them regularly. You are missed. Thank you Archie Trammell and God speed.
