4 fatalities confirmed. WSBTV news is reporting a Piper PA-32 that had trouble climbing out after taking off from runway 3L. Hit the south side of the I-285 median north of PDK.

Now saying runway 3R which makes more sense to me. 3R is shorter and more often used for light aircraft.

Nevermind...I seem have gotten confused. 3R is the longer runway.

3R/21L is actually the longer of the two parallel runways at PDK. But I seem to recall them frequently doing IFR departures on 3R even for light aircraft. Usually I'd be assigned 3L there, but I've used 3R a few times. That's a lot of runway for a PA28!

On this date FAA shows that N5802V registration status is "expired" as of 3/31/2015. http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNum_Results.aspx?NNumbertxt=5802V

I saw that as well, but not knowing much about registering aircraft (I'm an insurance agent)I wondered if maybe the renewal just wasn't showing up yet. Perhaps improperly maintained in other areas, would be my guess. And I'm just curious...I noticed the original "airworthiness" as 1977 (if I read it right)...a 38 year old single engine aircraft, is that typical?

The FAA site says that its information is updated daily at midnight, but who really knows. There are many scores of certificated single engine aircraft with current registrations much older than 38 years flying every day. Age doesn't matter as long as the plane is regularly inspected, well maintained and refurbished or restored as needed. An expired registration does not necessarily indicate poor maintenance or bad condition, but one would normally expect all the documentation to be current and the FAA pretty much requires it.

Four dead after plane crashes onto major Atlanta highway

Four people died on Friday when the small plane they were riding in crashed on a busy Atlanta-area highway after taking off from a nearby airport, local authorities said.
The accident shut down a stretch of Interstate 285 and caused traffic problems throughout Atlanta. But no drivers on the major thoroughfare reported any injuries, including a tractor-trailer driver who said the aircraft clipped his truck.

"It was a sheer miracle that no one was hurt and that we had no other victims," said DeKalb County Fire Rescue Captain Eric Jackson.

Incredible headaches for drivers as authorities reopen the westbound lane but keep the eastbound lane closed to traffic.

is this just north of 'spaghetti junction' near the old General Motors- Doraville Assembly plant? I have family that travel that section of 285 every day from Tucker up to Dunwoody. Prayers for the families of those lost.

Four dead after plane crashes onto Atlanta highway -local TV

ATLANTA, May 8 (Reuters) - A small plane carrying four people crashed on a busy Atlanta-area highway after taking off from a nearby airport on Friday, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said.

Television footage of the smoldering wreckage showed little of the plane was left intact and local media reported all four people on board were killed.

The Piper PA-32 crashed on Interstate 285 after departing from the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, just northeast of Atlanta, said FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.

Traffic was shut down in both directions on the highway, which was expected to remain closed for hours, according to local media.
