Noted as a slam down, which to me would indicate a hard landing. Apparently there was a bounce or a real lightening of gear weight and it either skidded or bounced thataway. Just my opinion. Total speculation. There is no question how he landed and where he wound up. Speculation is how he got there.

No speculation, he definitely got there by plane!!!

With the FAA questioning United on their pilot qualifications and scheduling, maybe they knew what they were talking about.

For decades, United was the standard by which all other pilot training programs were measured. In fact, other airlines used to contract United to train their pilots. But with Smisek cutting expenses, including gutting the best pilot training in the world, to artificially inflate the bottom line for the benefit of himself and stockholders, this is what you get.

Grew up in Chi town. United this United that. Gotta get my digs in whenever possible. LOL Guess those guys up front had no idea how many pilot apps are on file.

Good thing is only the plane and pilot egos were damaged. One is maybe fixable -- not sure about the other two. LOL

I'm speculating again, but I bet they are more careful if there is a next time. They might get lucky and it might get chalked up to something besides pilot error. LOL

It was very wet at IAH this morning. Received about 2.5 inches of rain in the hours leading up to the landing and was still raining at the time. Have to believe a wet runway could have played some part in this. Then again, we are talking about United.....

Slight correction. United name; Continental metal, pilots and flight crew.

News footage shows it on the hi-speed very close to the runway. Can you say "excessive speed"? Transmission to tower was a female voice saying they were off the taxiway. Just more fodder for the FAA investigation. Great timing, United!

Maybe it skidded on the snow coming from the front office? Bit late in the year to blame mother nature.

Do you think that 737-924ER will be scrapped or repaired? I am glad to hear that everyone is alright. It's interesting because after I reviewed some of the incident videos it appeared to me that the plane wasn't on a runway, but a high speed turn-off taxiway.
preacher1
preacher1 2
Well, that decision will be just like on a car. How old and how much damage. There is a breaking point in there somewhere. If it's above it, call the scrap man; below it, fix it. Repair time also goes into that equation also.

I hope the aircraft is returned to service soon. Those -900s are my favorite!

All that I have seen is from

http://www.myfoxaustin.com/story/28785424/plane-skids-off-runway-at-george-bush-intercontinental-airport

It also says in the article, "Airport spokesperson Bill Begley told the AP that the plane landed normally but made a wide turn on the taxiway and the jet went into some muddy grass."

I agree on the Hi Speed. That being the case, damage may not be as bad and such a new bird, if repair time not excessive it'll probably get fixed. A little duct tape and it may fly next week. Who knows?
preacher1
preacher1 2
Actually, it looks like he came off the hi-speed, made a left turn and ran off a taxiway. That sure doesn't look like any runway at IAH that I have ever seen.

There is a disagreement between the PAX and UAL about what happened and you really can't tell by looking at the video what he went off of. PAX say runway and UAL says taxiway so who knows.

I wonder if PAX would be aware of the various designations.

Look at the pic at the first of the video... It is clearly the runway.. PAX are too stupid to know the difference. You can see the Hold Short line on the runway, they had apparently just exited the runway, and seeing how far they went into the mud they were probably going to fast to make that turn off to begin with.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 4
I'm thinking it isn't that the PAX are too stupid, rather simply uninformed. No reason for them to know the difference. Where the term "Hold Short" is found, or what that place is known as, is important to airline personnel - not the PAX. IMHO
preacher1
preacher1 2
You are probably right; to the public, pax and reporters, there is no difference in a taxiway or runway. It clearly shows him off and not far, yet the pax said it was a hard landing with a bounce, so who knows. I figure we have heard all we will hear.

Simply one more pilot error, this will continue with the pilot shortage created by so many good pilots are retiring. One can can teach the new pilots how to fly by computer, they come trained by video games but we can not teach them how to fly.

As I heard a couple of brothers talking one day; both were AA Captains: Old one to the young one; I taught you everything you know but I didn't teach you everything I know.

Where do they find these idiots to interview... LOL... The plane is SUNK down in the mud. You cannot just push it out... They will have to dig a slope down to it and then pull it out... If they push it back in the mud, all that is going to happen is the shear the nose gear off... it is not designed for that kind of pressure.
AWAAlum

Oh dear, I don't imagine that "pilot in training" made many points with the pilot of that flight. I wouldn't think the Captain took her "I think I could have done better" comment too well.. She's a PR nightmare.

Can't seem to find the story to post but a UAL flight(republic)was diverted in to COS instead of DEN on account of lightning. Plane kept on tarmac for 6 hours. Airport manager denies that she wouldn't bring them to a gate. Gonna be a hellacious he said/she said before it's over with.

Other than in rant form, his rant doesn't go too far away from your comments up above. When you boil them down, they pretty much say the same thing, but my other question is, if you feel that strongly about it why are you just now commenting on something that happened 2-3 weeks ago, 19 days to be exact. If you are that far behind, please refrain from commenting on posts this old as most of these folks have done moved on to 2-3 other things and your comments just pull this old one back out.
