U2 footage in HD (video)
The Lockheed U-2, nicknamed "Dragon Lady", is a single-engine, very high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) and previously flown by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). It provides day and night, very high-altitude (70,000 feet / 21,000 m), all-weather intelligence gathering. The aircraft is also used for electronic sensor research and development, satellite calibration, and satellite data validation. (www.youtube.com) Plus d'info...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
Fantastic footage.
I don't know how high he was but I was in the 100thSRW HQ at Davis Monthan one day, and one called in from over OKC, near Tinker AFB, with a flame out and unable to restart. It was about 1200 miles. The told him to deadstick it on in. Landed just fine a few hours later.
Before I was stationed at Beale AFB in '85, a pilot flying a mission out of Korea had an emergency somewhere over the Pacific. His elevator trim ran full up (or down) and he had to fight the elevator all the way back to Beale, for hours. When he landed @ Beale he had to be lifted out of the cockpit.
By the way, OKC to Davis Monthan is only 700 nautical not 1200 miles.
I guess I've got road miles in my head, but that is still a pretty good glide.lol
Just checked a 2012 aerial of Beale, where they were based. There are 4 sitting on the ramp.
I looked at the aerial on Google maps. Two of them had pods below the wings. Are those auxiliary fuel tanks or something else?
Pods are for equipment and sensors. U-2's do not carry external fuel.
