Qantas Airways announced that it will operate its non-stop Dallas/Fort Worth-Sydney flight with an Airbus A380 aircraft this fall. The 8,580-mile (13,800-kilometer) voyage became the longest scheduled commercial flight in the world by distance, after Singapore Airlines discontinued non-stop service between Singapore and Newark and Singapore and Los Angeles late last year. The two flights were 9,520 miles (15,300 kilometers) and 8,760 (14,100 kilometers) respectively. Qantas Flight 7 leaves… (www.frequentbusinesstraveler.com) Plus d'info...
flying that long on a plane aint fun , I don't care what size it is , I flew Singapore airlines san Francisco to hong kong 14 hours , 747-400 by the time we landed I felt like a complete zombie , I suppose it would be a different story in first class with the nice beds and all , but I don't have ten grand to throw around ,problem is when you see the adds for airlines that just started using the a380 , all you see is how wonderful the first class cabin is , guess what ? 80 % of passengers fly economy , and on an a380 its no different than a 747 or any other wide body , just a whole lot more people to deal with .
Working with Qantas over the past twenty five years a lot of routes have being restructured which will eventually replace the 744's with the A388'S or the A330'S. They will trial this bigger jet which will take more flight time and huge costings, which will depend on passengers filling the jet. QFA 8 DFW/BNE/SYD is done with a 744 aircraft. This will also be the same as QFA 107 which will replace the 744 next year.
Qantas are also looking at ending the YSSY/WSSS/YSSY as they are going to Dubai with Emirates. The 744 which operates this service will cease sometime next year. Other routes across the Tasman will be scaled back as well but using it's off shoot airline Jetstar to take QFA passengers. As competition grows over the Pacific and Trans Tasman services
Thanks for the insight on the current 744 rotations. Will be interesting to see how they handle the 388 as there are no 388 crews or flights based in BNE. I know it is not far from SYD
Story doesn't say but I think it would be a safe bet that it would be operating by then, at least that would be the plan. Those plans may change if they don't get deliveries on their next 380's though. Website should give equipment details when you book though and it may be on the Roo's website.
IDK, there is a post below that makes reference to the order but I did not know they had not exercised the option. As he says, it will come from delivery of those 2 or a realignment of service elsewhere to free something up.
Love it when the wind's out of the north; that's when I get to see this big bird on its slooow climb to altitude curving over my house in north Fort Worth heading from DFW. Seeing that 'roo lit up on the tail is so cool! Then I remember those folks will still be on that plane when I wake up the next morning...that's when I gladly head off to my comfy bed!
Don't get me wrong, preacher, I'd love to be on it someday and check out Oz for myself, but it's hard to forget how much of a pain it is to travel, plus nobody seems to be fans of QFA these days.
I know. I never flew but once or twice a year as a pax and generally just out and back, maybe with an overnite. You used to could plan a meeting around a schedule but not anymore. You can't never tell what's gonna happen, even on a non stop.
I believe that is called First Class. Likely next move will be to recruit some passengers from Coach to serve meals to the rich folks up front or up top!!
In 1993, I flew from Sydney to Los Angeles in a Qantas 747-400 and it was the worst airline flight I've ever had in my life. The seats were like concrete. Fortunately, we were by a door so we could stand up now and then, but we were sitting on our jackets for padding on the seats. Troop seats in a C-130 and the unpadded ejection seat in an F-4 were both far more comfortable. Neither my nor my wife's call button worked and for two (2) hours during the 13-hour flight (which was daytime), no cabin crew were to be seen anywhere and when they finally reappeared, they were surly, at best. For the last 90 minutes before landing, they were bragging nonstop on the PA about their new streamlined baggage claim and immigration procedures, but clearing immigration and baggage was a nightmare.
I complained (politely, but firmly) to Qantas about the flight and got a very snotty letter saying that baggage claim was the responsibility of LAX and immigration of the INS, but the PA announcements all boasted that it was a Qantas innovation. The letter also said that they had the "very latest" seats, which does not mean they're comfortable. Around the time I received their reply, an article in a travel magazine said that they were replacing all the seats in their 747-400s. Gee, I wonder why.
By contrast, our flight from LA to Auckland was with Air New Zealand, also in a 747-400, and it was superb in every way.
No doubt some of you will say that Qantas is the best airline of all time, and that's fine if you enjoyed your flights with them, but it was the direct opposite in my experience and I wouldn't fly with them again if they offered to pay me.
I hope for their victims', I mean self-loading cargo's, sake that 15 hours from Dallas-Fort Worth to Sydney is MUCH better than my flight on Qantas. I don't think they'd want to have that many pissed-off people trapped in a confined space for that long.
After a recent flight between Germany and the US, I've come to the conclusion that sling seats on a C-130, or a C-17 are preferable to commercial air. I think I'd rather go as cargo.
Shuffling the deck chairs I think. Shedding 5000 plus staff, reducing international routes, retiring the 767 fleet and a number of 744s, loss of $400 million in six months etc. They could never carry a full PAX load or freight with the 744 over that distance and had to divert on a number of occasions. A380s becoming available due to the cutting back on flights to LHR from MEL. Don't think they will take up the additional A380s. Time will tell.
Any insight in to what cuts MEL - LHR. Currently daily via DXB as you know I am sure!. Reality is that they should consider feeding the extensive Emirates network from DXB and not fly on to LHR!!. Lots of passengers are going to other places (Dublin, GLA, CDG etc etc) and it would be interesting to see what capacity is used on the DXB -LHR sector and if Emirates feeds traffic to QF. Very interesting developments in long haul travel in general.
Does seem to be a bit of a straw grab but they have to try something. If they can add revenue without adding expense, it might work. As you said, time will tell.
A388 does not compare to the 744 on long routes. The cabin air is far superior (on the 388) and the bathrooms are bigger. I was in coach MEL - LAX and while it was coach it was far superior to anything else I have been on. The 787 has a much improved cabin air system so it is not Airbus specific, nearly a system that was designed 20 years later
The article states that " Qantas Flight 8 currently leaves DFW at 9:55 p.m. and arrives at 8:15 a.m. the next day after making a stop in Brisbane." Wouldn't that be 2 days later? They are forgetting the International Date Line. When I flew LAX-SYD, we left Wednesday night and arrived Friday morning.
From an east coast USA passenger almost anything that eliminates a stop at LAX is a huge benefit. I will be interested to see how this works. The QF A388 fleet is pretty much fully burdened right now. They have 2 more aircraft on order so maybe that is the answer. The other possibility is reducing or eliminating the HKG round trips a couple of times a week
It ain't no fun for the pointey end guys either. We used to leave FSM, pick up a relief crew and top off gas at DFW and into the old KaiTak. Even being able to stretch and even take a nap still wasn't any fun, just boring as all get out.
I don't know if it was the most difficult or not but let's just say the seat started puckering about wheels up over here. LOL. It really pains me that a lot of these younger guns nowadays will never have the pleasure. Even though it's not active anymore, I think it out to be required performance in all SIM training these days, and I'd sure like to be a fly on the wall if it was.LOL
Originally when I heard that an airline was bringing the a380 to Dallas, I guessed it would be Qantas. When I heard that Emirates brought it, I thought I had gotten it wrong, now I know I was partially right.
Looks like they did as far as the initial comment above. He won't ever change though. Right, wrong, or indifferent, it's his opinion and he will continue to express it as he sees fit. He has changed his name but his opinions give him away. Given the various expressions from time to time, he is probably not the only one feeling that way, just the only one publicly expressing it. That is his right, I guess, but a public site such as this just cannot tolerate such.
Mike..there are white terrorist also, who claim to adhere to a particular faith. You categorize all Muslims as terrorist so you are saying you don't like whites because there are white terrorist....Right? I suggest you stand-down with the Preach...you'll never win. P.S. Buy a dictionary, look up "understanding" Let us know if it applies in your world.
Sept. 11th was horrible, I doubt anyone forgot it. Eventually, we all got over Pearl Harbor though too. Don't worry folks, Phil just figured out how to reconnect the interwebs from his moms basement.
I haven't. 9/11/2002 was a great day for me. National Airlines (ROK) offered $1 airfare to any of their destinations. With the intention of wanting a Philly cheesesteak, I took a redeye flight from KLAS-KPHL, woke up at 8am, spent the entire day in Philly, stopped at a kiosk on the corner of 5th and Market, bought my cheesesteak, train back to the airport, and was home in Vegas by 8pm that night.
Airfare: $36 ($2 fare, $17 in taxes each way). Train ride from PHL to/from Philadelphia: $4. Philly Cheesesteak: $7. Making everyone hungry by on a B752 for 5 hours by letting the cheesesteak with mushrooms, onions, and melted provolone waft through the entire cabin while enjoying half of it: PRICELESS.
Wait.... you only ate HALF? I'd have had nothing but the greasy wrapper left by the time I got on the plane! Then again, when I was a flight attendant for USAirways, we learned to eat fast. 8-)
So ya burned a day and $40 for a sandwich? Dang, man, how much is your time worth? I know there's gotta be some transplants in Vegas who can cook a decent Philly!
$40 was a bargain compared to the $350 that AWE, COA, and USA were offering. I won't even get into what NWA and UAL were offering then, especially because of how scared people were for flying on *that day*.
So $40 for a roundtrip transcon flight? that's worth it. Flying to show that terrorists aren't going to stop me from living my life? Priceless.
Unfortunately, the only place that had decent Philly at that time in Vegas closed down. They opened up recently under a new owner, but everywhere else in Vegas tried to be 'fancy' about it, and to be honest, Philly cheesesteaks are supposed to be messy, runny, with grease still dripping out even after double-bagging it. That's the good stuff!
