Huge Chaff Cloud That Lit Up Radars As It Drifted Across The Midwest Remains A Mystery

Soumis

Yesterday, meteorologists, and anyone else watching weather radar in southern Illinois, southwestern Indiana, and western Kentucky, noticed an unusual formation drifting through the area. Although evidence remains limited, this was likely a burst of chaff released from a U.S. military aircraft, but there is still no clear explanation as to why the plane released the radar-reflecting countermeasures in this particular area. In the follow-up article, they state "The plane needed to dump the excess chaff in its countermeasures dispensers before landing as a safety precaution." Can someone explain why dumping the chaff would be needed for safety? I get dumping fuel, but I don't see how chaff is that significant to require being dumped. Just seems the press release statement is hiding something. I will admit ignorance on this so that is why I'm asking if anyone here is in the know.

Here is the follow-up article:

Perhaps it was not the chaff itself, but its (possibly incendiary) dispensing system that was the safety concern.

The possible explanation was given that a disarming crew might not have been available at their landing field does sound feasible.

Isn't chaff a suitable feedstock for reindeers? Seems pretty straightforward to me, seeing a fat bearded guy in a red and white suit must be doing flight tests at present.

In reference to the last section of the story ...

I don't care what anyone says. Metals are NOT good for ANY engine, turbine or piston.

Good thing it's winter. Had it been in summer, it would have been difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.

P.S. The West Virginia Air National Guard admitted deploying the chaff, though the explanation is nonsense - for safety reasons prior to landing. I still think it was beer cans.

Don't expect the military to tell the truth. The information officer probably doesn't get the truth either. The history of dealing with the military shows they fib and now that guy is gone with no one responsible. They can cut orders and the person be gone the next morning.
