Ed Force One Badly Damaged on the Ground in Chile

Soumis

Ed Force One was this morning tethered to a tow truck to be taken for refueling prior to flying over the Andes to Cordoba for the next show. On moving the steering pin that is part of the mechanism that connects the ground tug to the aircraft seemingly fell out. On making a turn the aircraft had no steering and collided with the ground tug badly damaging the undercarriage, two of the aircraft's engines and injuring two ground tug operators, both of whom have been taken to hospital. I'm showing my ignorance here, but aren't there procedures that require someone to be in control of a massive rolling aircraft?

Very clever. Haha

Even if the towed aircraft became detached, how can ONE ground tug damage BOTH engines (one on either side). ???

Shown are engines 1 and 2. Ground to cockpit communications established? Towing or pushing? Speed may have been a factor as well

unless it is BOTH engines on one side (#1 and #2 on 747). the way pictures are taken it seemed there was a LEFT / RIGHT going on

Did the ground handlers work for Swissport???

See IM's Facebook page for images of the mangled engines.....

Led Zeppelin used a Boeing 720 (I think) for an American tour back in the 70's, but it was not painted as lavishly as "Ed Force One"

Did the tow crew work for Swissport????

Ok so its a Rock band AC and dumb tug drivers with no one in the cockpit monitoring the tow so brakes could be applied.

I'm guessing you don't have much experience in aircraft ground movements.

I'm guessing I don't have much experience in figuring out how your statement's relevant to my question!!!

If you had done a lot of aircraft ground ops you'd know that his statement accurately reflects the only way this could have happened. Nobody was riding brakes, or the article would also have mentioned a brake system failure, not just the sheared tow pin.

This is what happens when under trained outsourced contractors handle airplanes.

Looks like they did not do an encore at the show. You gotta love those professional ground crews

Is there somebody who can make sense of what really happened, all the news are so confusing and more so when there is a picture of a tug truck next to a pool of red liquid (I am so glad that they did not say it was blood, LIMAO)

Iron Maidens Ed Force One 747 Very badly damaged in Chili

The music and the aviation worlds were wowed recently by the iconic metal band Iron Maiden’s unveiling of their tour plane, a 747-400 with their name blazed across it. Sadly, less than a month later, and early in Iron Maiden’s tour, the jumbo jet has been badly damaged in a ground mishap in Chile.

I'm guessing the aircraft is leased, it is a vital link between the current tour and the bands last two tours, the last one a 757, and now a 747. If you look at the bands site the aircraft is featured in several places, so how are they going to get another aircraft reworked and painted any time soon, before the tour is over. A plain 747 just will not be the same to their fans. Is this something anyone else has ever seen before?

The jet is supplied by Air Atlanta Icelandic (registered TF-AAK) and customised by Volga-Dnepr Gulf,

I met the president/owner of Icelandic while the aircraft was here in FLL last month. He was traveling with the plane on the first few legs to make sure everything went smoothly. The aircraft is charted for the entire tour. Too bad the crew was not available and in the cockpit during the ground movement. My inside contact with the charter broker advised they expect Ed Force One to be repaired (or new engines) by the time the band is scheduled to depart Brazil for NYC at the end of the month. I will be happy to see her in the sky again!

I guess it would be faster to replace the engines than to paint another plane.
I said "I guess" so don't shoot me if my comment is stupid. Just educate me why I'm wrong and what would be a better option.

Someone probably swiped the steering pin to get drinking money at the recycling yard... :-)

This is one slick way to get new engines on a airplane out of warranty! Thank you, Captain Canopenier.
