Accident: Alaska B737 near Bakersfield on Feb 1st 2015, laser beam injures pilot
An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-900, registration N431AS performing flight AS-249 from San Diego,CA to Portland,OR (USA), was enroute at FL360 near Bakersfield,CA (USA) at about 02:40Z (Feb 2nd) when the aircraft was hit by a green laser beam causing an eye injury to one of the pilots. it should be noted that this was most likely someone using a green laser (very popular) to point a telescope. it is a very effective way to quickly point the telescope at what you are wanting to look at. at 36000 im sure the person pointing the laser had no idea he was accidentally pointing at an aircraft. even so, you should be extremely careful. and maybe they should ban such practice.
Regardless, if you see blinking aircraft lights up in the sky, best not to shine your laser in that direction.
You learn something everyday. Whether it was or not what happened, I had no idea they were used for that. That could also account for a magnification. WOW
One of the commenters on the story itself said they weren't that far off the NAS at China Lake. Could have been a drone or some kind of bogey off of there. My curiosity is the angle and height it would have taken to get to the flight deck.

Where could a beam have come from, strong enough to give that pilot an eye energy at FL360. It has been one thing to get them on approach or takeoff, but at 36000feet? Dang.
