it should be noted that this was most likely someone using a green laser (very popular) to point a telescope. it is a very effective way to quickly point the telescope at what you are wanting to look at. at 36000 im sure the person pointing the laser had no idea he was accidentally pointing at an aircraft. even so, you should be extremely careful. and maybe they should ban such practice.

Regardless, if you see blinking aircraft lights up in the sky, best not to shine your laser in that direction.

You learn something everyday. Whether it was or not what happened, I had no idea they were used for that. That could also account for a magnification. WOW

One of the commenters on the story itself said they weren't that far off the NAS at China Lake. Could have been a drone or some kind of bogey off of there. My curiosity is the angle and height it would have taken to get to the flight deck.

Where could a beam have come from, strong enough to give that pilot an eye energy at FL360. It has been one thing to get them on approach or takeoff, but at 36000feet? Dang.

If the crew landed safely, why does the headline lead tell us there was an accident?

The Poster just pulled in the story headline. It was misbranded and should have read INCIDENT instead of ACCIDENT

FL360 is by far the highest altitude that I have ever seen in a laser injury report -- that's quite distressing.

Given the vast area and the fact that the pilots can't exactly look down to see where the laser might be coming from, it is unlikely that the culprit will ever be caught unless someone turns him in.

I know the commercial aircraft manufacturers are working on optical coatings for the cockpit windows to try to mitigate this problem, but widespread availability is years away and it doesn't help the average GA pilot who often flies alone.

I wonder if that ain't a typo. To injure at 36000 you would have to be fairly close at altitude.????????????????

The published flight track shows the flight at cruise altitude (360) at 6:32 PM. Incident was a few minutes after that, as reported.

Well, all that is as it should be but what in the world is out there that will shoot that high and do injury.

If you are on the ground and watch a plane fly by at altitude, you can barely see it let alone the windshield. It would seem that the angle would be too severe. It is a scary thought that the laser could have come from another aircraft.

That's what has my curiosity up. On purpose or accident of some type. No telling what is flying around out in that country.

This was an AS scheduled flight from SoCal to PDX. The incident was over Bakersfield. It would be unusual for the airplane to be below cruise altitude there.

It will continue until minimum mandatory sentences of five years or more without parole are put into place and a few of these perps do the time.

Don't start a squawk off with Accident when it wasn't an accident, in two ways. First, the plane didn't crash or get damaged, so this would be classified as an incident. Secondly, the guy with the laser did this intentionally. Sorry to come off like this, but there's no point in trying to spin everyone up like Fox News does every time something minor happens.

Well, you can't blame the poser. He didn't write the story. Agree it is an incident but it may have been accidental rather than intentional. 36000 is awfully high.

"Incident" would have been the appropriate category.

These people with Lasers need hard prison time or the Death Sentence. This is nothing more than murder/attempted murder/terrorist attack.... These people are idiots...
