A $64 million runway for no one in Alaska?

Soumis

Remember Alaska's "Bridge to Nowhere," a $400 million span that was supposed to connect Ketchikan to its airport on sparsely inhabited Gravina Island? The project gained infamy in 2005 as a waste of taxpayer dollars and the funds earmarked for it were withheld. The 8,000 residents of Ketchikan continue to be connected to their airport by ferry. Fast forward six years and another remote Alaskan airport project is raising questions about how the government spends money. The price… (news.blogs.cnn.com) Plus d'info...

The reason it was "nowhere" was due to the fact that it has no
bridge. With a bridge it could have been "somewhere. Have any of the people that were complaining about the proposed bridge ever been to Ketchikan? Has anybody ever noticed that Sitka got a bridge?

James Wallace I feel a lot of predjudice coming from a hateful egotistical I'm better than them individual. Or should I say a Non-Native individual. Granted services are a lot more expensive here in Alaska. I don't know where you are at and don't really care. Just because you can walk or drive to anywhere you want doesn't mean us Natives shouldn't have at least the level of services where we can get out in case of an emergency or otherwise. You just stay where you are at and leave us alone.
After all it was you non natives that screwed up things everywhere in the world and just couldn't leave well enough alone.

Kinda like small town air service subsidy and living close to airports. I hate to sound mean but ya'll chose to live there, and as you allude to, in order to get away from the problems of what we have screwed up. You can't have it both ways. I live 20 miles from town and figured out all the lack of convenience and extra stuff it would take to live here when we moved down here 33 years ago, and I ain't whining for town to come closer. I dealt with party lines and dial up internet for years but that was just part of it.

I agree with Mr. Bookout, you decided to live in a remote area without an airport. So you can also decide to move to another location where an airport exists OR you can help build an airport with city/private funding only. If the Trident company brings in enough revenue to the city/state over a certain period to pay for the costs of the airport, then fine, build it.

multiply that by the X factor and voila 18 Trillion in the hole with no way out. I can't wait to see when the euro will take over the green back as the currency of choice - than you will be asking for chump change

Just to clear the air, I like Mr. Bookout choose to live in the country sort of (2 hours to Nashville for airline service) because I do not want or want to pay for city services. I hold no ill will toward Natives of Alaska. If you feel you need more services move closer to them. They can only be provided locically if there is enough tax base to pay for them. The every little shithole village i referred to includes the lower 48.

Alaska, we may vote Republican and complain about the Federal Government, but damnit, we love us some Welfare.

Riiight, it all became his fault the instant he was inaugurated, but when he leaves office, whether after one term or two, you'll blame him for decades to come. Funny how Republican presidential responsibility ends with their term. Instead of wondering where the $18 trillion came from, see if you can wrap your mind around the phrase "Republican presidential responsibility".

actually it is everyone's responsibility Republicans and Democrats and the PEOPLE of the good old USA and I don't blame him more than I blame GW who started this whole bank roll going nowhere - with his pretext of WMD, the wars the US is involved like Afghanistan - the Ruskies where there for 10 years cut their losses and moved on, the US did not learn anything from that; walked right in and it's spend spend spend ad nauseum........ well there ain't any more money to spend. We the people have failed ourselves for allowing our governments to do what they want when they want with no accountability....why is that ?

Well, said Matt. If Bush would have concentrated on Afghanistan on account of 911 as we started it, rather than trying to finish what Daddy started and didn't finish in Iraq, we would have probably been out of both by now instead of the quagmire it is. Say what they want but to me it's 'Nam all over agin with the exception that the people ain't taking it out on the troops, YET.

the real problem is that we've forgotten that we have a voice but in today's day and age we use the internet to complain about issues and not demonstrating when we should at Capitol Hill or any where that is appropriate. and we know where our emails go when they don't meet the reader's expectation - we and I mean all of us need to get off our fat asses and demonstrate our dislikes especially when it go es to our younger generation dying getting killed in a far off land for no good reason

Nowadays every little shithole village and town in the USA needs an airport, train station, and a new bridge at someone elses expense. If you want to live remotely don't expect city services.
