I would hate to think that you view flight attendants as just glorified waitstaff and their main priority is serving drinks and snacks. As a former flight attendant our main concern is the safety of passengers. We go through pretty thorough training in safety and security as well as first aid and at least in my airline annual recurrent training. It may not have been as rigorous as my training in the US Air Force, but it was someone close and that extra training did prove it's worth more often than not.
