Here is the track for "Speedbird" (a A380-800):

YYC newly expanded international terminal (which has the ability to handle A380) doesn't actually open until October 31. Maybe this was also a factor. YYC is served by BA (BA102/103).

I was curious why they didn't divert to CYYC, Calgary, which they flew over. Apparently, although the runways and gates can handle an A380, none flies there, so Calgary is not set up operationally to handle an A380 landing.

I was wondering the same thing, or CYWG Winnipeg or even KMSP Minneapolis-St. Paul, all of which seem to be closer to the track. The A380 has visited KMSP.

Going to Calgary would have required a pretty rapid descent. They were at FL370 when they diverted. They needed time to get down, and probably also to dump fuel to reduce weight.

Torsten, they were 535 km from YYC when they diverted from their original path. They remained at FL370 until they were 226 km from YVR, so it wouldn't have been a rapid descent.

I suspect that they wanted to burn fuel, yes, but also because, although YYC has the facilities to accept an A380, they are not set up logistically to handle such a large plane.

Trust me, if the situation was dire, they would have landed at the nearest suitable airport. Apparently, it wasn't. Also, it appears as though the weather at CYYC was really lousy.

At some point in time, the Airlines are better served releasing the cause of the issue. Here I suspect food is likely to have been the issue.
