Is fuel prices and maintenance costs main reason for End of the Boeing's iconic 747?

The 747 has not been retired, although in terms of popularity it is significantly lower. The 747–8i (the newest 747 variant) has not received many orders from airlines and has survived essentially as a freighter (because that has a special nose-loading capability). Very briefly, the main reason is fuel prices and maintenance costs, which made newer, more efficient aircraft like the 777 significantly more attractive. (aviationsquad.com) Plus d'info...

No carrier wants to fly more than two engines citing fuel costs. Yet when fuel prices go down, they never reduce the price of a ticket. Even though two engines do a good job, they are not as safe as four. Look at all the returns on one engine. With the 747 and 380 no return needed unless two engines go down.

Very true Matt, and the airlines only seem to look at the short time frame when it comes to cost, if they would look at reliability and long term savings they would probably use more 4 engine aircraft.
