Air Force fires general over A-10 jets 'treason' remarks

Soumis

An Air Force general has been fired after an investigation into comments he made to lower-ranking officers about how talking to members of Congress about the capabilities about the A-10 “Warthog” attack jet was tantamount to treason, the Air Force confirmed Friday. (www.foxnews.com) Plus d'info...

This is all about protecting the F-35. Which, to me, is the real treason going on.

F35 pos. The old F5's can outfly it and outgun it

The Air Force has been fighting this problem since the 1980's and maybe even earlier. If it isn't fast, bright and shiny and new, it's not worth keeping. But when it comes down to supporting a grunt in the mud, NOTHING does the job better than close support aircraft. The A-10 is a great example of a close support aircraft. The brass is constantly trying to kill the program but whenever the lead starts flying and the grunts hit the ground, the A-10 program justifies itself over and over again.

Early in 1963, I was visiting a friend of mine who was a F-100 driver at Misawa AFB, Japan. A bunch of us were sitting around the the club discussing air power when I said that the only reason they existed was to support the poor grunt in the mud. My statement generated a fair amount of talk amongst the zoomies but the conversation quieted down when an Air Force Major by the name of Chappie James said, "The Marine's right." He and many others have recognized this fact, but every once in a while, the decision makers have to be brought back to reality.

The solution is to give the planes, pilots and mission to the marines. They already have a wonderful air arm and know what it's all about. Oh yeah, take the money away too.

This time around there well be a move to do just that. Tom Cotton is on the committee along with Joni Ernst with McCain in the chair. These Airedales are not going to stroll in there and get away with their "Screw the Grunts" philosophy. They will lose a piece of their butts and likely a good part of their budget. Cotton is fearless and they know it. Even the left side has supporters of the CAS mission.

Well, all they have to do is look outside the beltway and see that everything since DESERT STORM has been fought in the Mideast sand rather than in the skies as they envision. They may not need a gun for dogfights but they definitely will for CAS, and before 2020, and one that will shoot more than 600 rounds. Lest anybody forget, the A10 was designed around the gun. Remember the offset steering wheel?

Don't get me started on McCain. He violated his Code of Conduct when he lived in the Hanoi Hilton for so many years. I quote Article III

"If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and to aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy."

If he had failed to escape and died he would have been free. He never tried. He should have been tried for treason under the UCMJ.

I don't agree with John McCain's positions on almost everything but I do think that he deserves some consideration because he got the crap kicked out of him on a daily basis while he was incarcerated in North Vietnam. I understand that he was offered an early release by the North which, if he had taken it, would have been a major propaganda queue. He understood that and didn't accept any favors.

I don't know what kind of rope you're smoking, but I'd like to see how you would have reacted if you were in his shoes. Unless you were there, I'd suggest you moderate your thoughts and position on this subject.

Took a SAM - got shot down in 67 - was in captivity for three-four months. Broke out and didn't violate my oath.

IMHO - McCain is still a coward.

The Air Force suits did not want him pulled up by the Senate Armed Services Committee as they attempt to lie their way into killing the A-10 now that Congress is coming back from one of their many breaks. These hearing promise to be wonderful entertainment as the war experienced committee members destroy those suits and their phony data. The relevant subcommittees are chaired and stocked on both sides Democrat and Republican with members with more combat experience than the individuals they will be questioning. The suits will not be protected by members of the loyal opposition on this one...this will be comeuppance.

With it taking so long for them to can him, I was beginning to think he'd get away with it. I'm surprised he wasn't demoted and retired.

His accusations of "treason" not only attacked the constitutionally-enshrined civilian oversight of the military, it was a really stupid thing to say and his judgement is seriously flawed. Did he really think no one would report what he said? And to say he would deny it if anyone did report it just magnifies his complete lack of intelligence. Anyone that stupid should not be in such an important job.

The question now is will he resurface in another senior job after a suitable amount of time out of the spotlight? The fact that he wasn't demoted and retired keeps that possibility open.

They're removing obstacles/trip points to their CAS game plan. They are so sensitive these days.. .

You are right....this is the Ugly Girlfriend Syndrome. They don't want to take him out in public for a distraction, but will find uses for him because the was just pushing the Air Force dogma. They will have opponents in both houses and from the Army so want him hidden.

This whole tangle will be interesting. I have been wrong before but in the end, I think we'll keep not only the A10, but upgrade all the other older airframes and then eventually the F35 will go away. Of course, this is all dependent on the make up of future administrations. Congress will have to do it, as the USAF won't, but somebody over there needs to start reading the tea leaves.

It'll never happen. The F-35 program is lining too many pockets, both in Congress and outside of it.

Sorry to hear this. However I can't find your name in an authoritative list of POWs found here: http://www.pownetwork.org/bios.htm

Maybe you could explain this discrepancy.

I don't see Canucks nor Aussies on that list
