United Airlines is on the verge of leasing over thirty-six Airbus A321neo jets, as per Bloomberg News, leveraging sources familiar with the discussions. The move comes as United seeks alternatives to the yet-to-be-certified Boeing MAX 10 aircraft, initially anticipated to become a fleet mainstay this year.
The decision is partly influenced by renewed certification doubts following a January incident involving an Alaska Airlines 737-9. With 277 Boeing 737-10 jets on order and an option for an additional 200, United is exploring the A321neo as a potential substitute amidst Boeing’s challenges.
Despite United’s interest in the A321neo, Airbus’ order book is reportedly full until 2030, posing a challenge to immediate procurement.
Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, announced at a recent JPMorgan investor conference a significant strategic shift in the airline’s approach to aircraft acquisitions. Demonstrating adaptability and strategic foresight, United has asked Boeing to halt the production of the 737-10 model, an aircraft for which the airline had previously placed orders.
In his statement on Tuesday Mar. 12, Kirby highlighted United Airlines’ growing interest in Airbus aircraft as potential alternatives but expressed caution about the cost, emphasizing the importance of not overpaying.
