Pilot of British Airways flight from Las Vegas to London Heathrow demanded to make an emergency landing in Montreal over 'suspect device' 

  • Flight BA274 was due to arrive at 3.25pm in London but it was diverted

A British Airways flight travelling from Las Vegas to London Heathrow has been diverted to Montreal after reports of a bomb threat. 

Photographs taken from the airport show a dozen police cars racing to flight BA274, carrying 312 passengers, which made an emergency landing at Trudeau Airport in Dorval at 5.47am local time (10.47am GMT).

Montreal Police and British Airways said the pilot requested to land the plane following an 'emergency' during the flight, while the son of two passengers on-board said they were told there was a 'suspect device' on the aircraft.

Ewan Sommerville, a genetics PhD student based in Newcastle upon Tyne, said his parents were on the flight and were told officials were investigating a 'suspect device'.

He wrote on Twitter: 'My parents flight was diverted 2 Montreal, evacuated&searched. They and everyone safe and calm! [sic]

'[I] am looking forward to having them home soon!' 

Jean-Pierre Brabant, media relations officer for Montreal Police SPVM, told MailOnline that they received a call at 5.15am following a call from British Airways, saying that the pilot in charge of flight 274 wanted to make an emergency landing.

'He said there was an emergency during the flight and he wanted to land,' he said. 

'He took the decision to land the plane in Montreal around 6am this morning, and the plane landed without a problem.

'The entire plane was evacuated and that went very well. The passengers were taken by bus in the airport.

'There is going to be an approach in the next hour by police, bags are going to be taken off and checked over, and the SWAT team and canines will do an approach and go inside the plane to make sure there is nothing dangerous inside.' 

Mr Brabant said he could not expand on what the nature of the emergency was.

A spokesman for British Airways refused to reveal what the emergency was to MailOnline, saying: 'We never discuss issues of operational security.'

However she confirmed that the flight had been diverted after a request from the captain.

She said: 'Our flight from Las Vegas to Heathrow landed safely this morning at Montreal and customers left the aircraft as normal after the captain took the decision to divert the aircraft as a precaution. 

'The safety and security of our customers, crew and aircraft are our highest priorities at all times.

'We are looking after the customers and will provide hotel rooms for them and will rebook them to other flights as soon as we can.

'We are working with the Canadian authorities and giving them our fullest support.' 

The flight left McCarran International Airport.International Airport in Las Vegas at 9.38pm local time, and was due to arrive in London Heathrow, terminal five, at 3.25pm today. 

Police said no one was injured during the landing or evacuation. 

A spokesman for London Heathrow said no other departures from the U.S. heading to the airport had been disrupted as a consequence of the incident.
