I have flown a lot in 727, but had never seen with winglets

Outstanding Pic. Great airplane but noise and fuel economy caught up to it. JT8-9 (14,500 lbs/thrust) were thirsty and loud. There was a plan to install -217 engine (MD-80 20,000 lbs/thrust) on the pylons and leave one -9 in the center engine just used for t/o and landing. Ended up costing more than a new twin-engine. Still a nice airplane, I enjoyed flying it. Hand flyer, no computers.

Winglets are a super 27 conversion I believe

thanks for the nice comments

The Super 27 has -217C engines at #1 and #3 and a -17 at #2. It climbs quickly and can operate at higher altitudes. I am flying one at the moment. There is also a conversion for the 727-100

Took my first flight in one of these back in '76, from EWR to Milwaukee on Northwest Orient. You're right Joel, loud as hell! Once a common sight in the skys of north Jersey. Now only Cargo Jet flies them into EWR from Bermuda. Nice shot!

Was privileged to be a left seater on this aircraft. A pilot's plane for sure! What great flying bird! Wish I could go back and do it again. The re-engined 727's must be a blast to fly.

A "Man's" plane! You thought you were driving a truck, not like these "fly-by-wire", where you flip on the A/P at 1,000ft.!
